Introduction
Much of my work is clay-based where I explore both functional ware and sculpture. For me, concept, process, technique are interwoven into a common goal of communication. My preferred approach to Form is to use deconstructive strategies such as altered or appropriated forms and collage-like surfaces. Included in this approach are my 3D digital designs. My work has been exhibited in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia in Canada and can also be found in private collections in Canada, France and Ireland.
Formal education includes an Honors BFA from Michigan State University (Painting and Sculpture). This was followed by an MA and Phil.M from the University of Toronto in Art History with an emphasis in Medieval and Renaissance periods. I also completed a B.ed degree in Art from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Equally formative have been visits with artists, studios, galleries and museums in Europe, China, Japan and South Africa (2017).
My professional experience includes teaching art and art history at the university level, organizing/curating exhibitions and writing reviews. As an art specialist in the Alberta education system, I give PD sessions on various aspects of ‘art’, ‘art making’, visual culture, the value of art in education and creativity. I present clay workshops locally and outside the province. Locally, I facilitate small groups at our local Old Man River Potters Guild with longer term projects.
